block-relief prints with watercolor accents

Block printing is an artistic technique in which wood, linoleum or rubber is carved, inked, and printed. Areas to show white are cut away from the block using a gouge, knife or chisel resulting in a relief of the desired image. The carving is then inked using a brayer, and the image is transferred to paper or cloth by way of stamping, rubbing or pressing.

Mokume gane means "wood grained metal" in Japanese. It is a technique of layering and fusing alloy metals using heat and pressure. Alternating colors of metal are stacked and fused to form a brick. The brick is then manipulated by rolling, carving, twisting, and/or cutting to form intricate patterns.
